Getting around the airport

One main terminal

Heraklion International Airport is the second busiest airport in Greece after Athens International Airport. It is the primary airport on the island of Crete and is located 5 km east of the main city centre of Heraklion. 

The airport serves as a hub for Olympic Airways, Sky Express and Aegean Airways and is composed of one passenger terminal, divided by Domestic and Schengen areas. The terminal hosts 3 passenger lounges, currency exchange offices, a pharmacy, a post office, smoking areas, ATMs, luggage services and duty-free shops.

Getting into Crete

Bus or taxi

Bus

Local shuttle buses are the easiest and most economical way of getting into Crete. Buses at the airport depart every few minutes from 06:00-21:15 during weekdays and take approximately 35 minutes to get to the city centre.

City bus number 78 goes to the bus station in Heraklion/Iraklion. The journey time to central is around 20 minutes. Travellers can also take Bus Line 1 which connects the airport to the city centre.

With a taxi, you can get to Heraklion downtown within 15 minutes.
