Getting around the airport

MUC

Munich Airport is one of Germany's largest airports, with plenty of shopping and eating options, and yet with a fairly straightforward layout. There are two terminals connected by a large open space called the 'Munich Airport Center'. Terminal 2 also has a Satellite building that opened in April 2016.

  • Terminal 1 serves Air Berlin, and all non-Star Alliance airlines. You'll find Gates A-F and the central area Z which has restaurants, shopping and car rental. It's not easy to walk from A to F gates after security, so it's better to check in at your designated gate.
  • Terminal 2 is Lufthansa's flagship terminal and serves Star Alliance airlines. You'll find Gates G and H here. You can walk freely between gates G and H after check in.
  • Terminal 2 Satellite is a separate building that offers both Schengen- and Non-Schengen-flights and is mainly used for transit connections. It is connected to Terminal 2 via underground train. The distance is 400 meters only. Gates K and L are located here.

Travelling between terminals

  • Landside, you can walk easily between terminals 1 and 2.
  • Airside, the only way to get between terminals without leaving the secure area (impossible if you're travelling on a non-Schengen visa) is to use the free Airport Shuttle bus. Buses leave Terminal 2, Gate H every 20 minutes. Get out at Terminal 1, Gate C08 (non-Schengen). There, you can go to the Atlantic Lounge and use its free wi-fi, refreshments and comfy chairs until you need to go again. To return to Terminal 2, just reverse the process. To reach the satellite building, use the separate underground train.

Getting into Munich

S-bahn is fastest

It's just as quick, and a lot cheaper than a taxi, to hop on the comfortable public transport network to get into Munich. Don't forget to validate your ticket in a blue validating machine on the stations.

Train

You can take the S1 or S8 public transport (S-Bahn) lines directly to the city centre. The S1 goes via Munich West, and the S8 via Munich East. S8 is faster but less frequent. Trains run every 10 minutes from 04:00 am to 01:30. Journey time is around 45 minutes. Get off at Marienplatz for great shopping and views of the city.

Location: Inside the Munich Airport Center, follow signs with a green ‘S’ logo
Cost: EUR 11.20 (4-zone ticket), or day ticket EUR 12.80, covering S-Bahn, U-Bahn trams and buses until 06:00 the next morning

Taxi

Take a cream-coloured Mercedes Benz taxi from outside the terminal buildings. Journey time is around 45 minutes.

Cost: Around EUR 70, flat fare of EUR 63 to the New Munich Exhibition Centre (Neue Mess München)

Bus

The Lufthansa bus is a comfortable option, with free newspapers and Wi-Fi. It will take you to central Munich in around 45 minutes, leaving every 15 minutes from 06:30-22:30. Find information and tickets on Level 3, or buy them online to save money.

When there's a big event on at the München Messe exhibition centre, you can get a free shuttle bus there.

You can also take buses to Salzburg, Innsbruck and other Austrian cities.

Cost: EUR 10.50 single online (check www.airportbus-muenchen.de/en for latest prices)
Location: It stops outside all terminals, in the order: Terminal 2, Terminal 1A, Airport Center (MAC) and Terminal 1D
