Getting into Birmingham

Train is quickest

There's a train station near the airport (also for the National Exhibition Centre) and this is the quickest way into Birmingham. Trains don't run at night though, so if you're travelling late at night you may need to take a bus.

Train

The Virgin Rail service and Cross Country Trains as well as Arriva Trains Wales and the local service London Midland will take you from nearby Birmingham International to Birmingham New Street in 10 minutes. Trains leave twice per hour. There are no trains during the night. You can also take Virgin to Manchester and Wolverhampton. Cross Country also runs to Birmingham New Street, four times per hour, as well as to Coventry, Manchester, Northampton, London and Bournemouth. Arriva trains run to Wales (Aberystwyth and Holyhead).

To get to Birmingham International, first take the free monorail Air-Rail Link service. These trains run continuously and the journey takes less than two minutes.

Cost: From GBP 2.40 one-way (depending on time of day, or if you buy your ticket online)
Buying tickets:
At the train station, or online at www.thetrainline.com
Location:
Take the airport monorail to Birmingham International station

Taxi

Hackney carriages (black cabs) operate from the airport 24 hours a day. Taxis are metered, but you can secure a better price by pre-booking your taxi, either online or at the airport. Journey time into the city centre is around 20-30 minutes.

Cost: Around GBP 30
Location: Taxi rank opposite the main airport entrance

Bus

There are also cheap and regular National Express buses into Birmingham and nearby cities:

  • 900: To Birmingham or Coventry. Buses run every 15 minutes during the day and 30 minutes in evenings and on Sundays
  • 966: To Solihull
  • 97A: To Birmingham and Chelmsley Wood, via Borders Green
  • Long distance buses: For example the 777 to Stansted Airport via Coventry and Luton Airport, and the 422 to London Victoria (3hrs) via Coventry and Luton Airport, or Burnley via Manchester in the other direction

Tip: To save money, you can also travel with discount bus company, Megabus. Tickets can only be purchased online, for as little as GBP 1: www.megabus.co.uk

Cost: GBP 2.30 to Birmingham or Coventry, from GBP 4.00 for a day ticket
Buying tickets:
On the bus (have exact change) or online at www.nationalexpress.com

Getting around the airport

BHX

Birmingham International Airport lies 10km south-east of the city centre. It's a small, compact airport with two terminals in one building. Terminal 1 serves most of the flights and has most of the shopping and dining facilities, while Terminal 2 serves only Ryanair and flybe.

The two main levels are:

  • Ground floor: Arrivals. UK arrivals on the right and international arrivals on the left. Check-in desks are in the centre.
  • First floor: Departures. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and lounges airside.

A new transit facility lets you stay airside when connecting with another flight, so you don't have to go through security.

The Air-Rail Link monorail service takes you for free to the nearest train station, Birmingham International, and the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).
