Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport - TPE

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport lies around 45km west of the nation's capital, Taipei, and is the main international airport serving the island. It has two terminals, each with two concourses:

• Terminal 1: In the shape of a H, with Concourses A and B on either side of a main hall containing check-in areas, immigration and security. 
• Terminal 2: Also in the shape of a H, with Concourses C (mainy China Airlines) and D (mainly EVA Air).

Future plans

Terminal 2 is currently undergoing an expansion, and there are plans for two new terminals and an underground rapid transit system connecting the terminals and the city of Taipei.

Taxi

Taxis are metered and reliable. The journey should take 30-40 minutes but may take more in peak hours. When returning to the airport, don't ask a taxi driver for 'Taipei Airport', as they may well take you to Taipei Songshan Airport in the city.

Bus

A range of buses run from both terminals with services every 10-20 minutes. The journey takes around 55 minutes. The Kuo-Kang bus (blue, white and purple) will take you to Taipei Main Station. This is also a handy, affordable route back to the airport (leaving from Exit Z5).

Cost: TWD 125 (exact fare needed in Taiwan dollars)

Train

A direct rail link (Taoyuan International Airport Mass Rapid Transit) connects the airport to downtown Taipei, Taipei Main Station in 36 minutes. To board the express MRT train, take the A12 train from Terminal 1 or the A13 train from Terminal 2.

Cost: TWD 150 

The airport is currently undergoing a USD 60 million refurbishment, due for completion in 2018. So far, travellers have not reported any inconveniences but be prepared for periodic building works to take place.

The airport has several themed waiting lounges with free access, including the Unforgettable Yummy lounge (Gate C6) that offers complimentary local tea and the Hello Kitty Wonderland (C3) for those with children. In the e-Library Lounge (C5), you can rent iPads and e-readers packed with books. All are open 24/7.

In Terminal 2’s transit area on the 4th floor, there’s a small hotel offering 21 rooms. Basic accommodations start from NT 3,200/USD 100 per night and come with free Internet and in-room movies.

There are also showers (NT 350/USD 11.50) and a sauna (NT 700/USD 23) available for travellers not staying overnight.

There are six free shower facilities at the two terminals, most of which are open 24 hours a day and come with tables, chairs, hooks and mirrors. There are located at:

Paid-for lounge access (free for Priority Pass card holders) is available on Level 4 in both terminals 1 and 2. Open from 06:00 – 23:30, costs are USD 35 for basic access and USD 48 for VIP entry. Stays are for a maximum three hours and services include beverages, a noodle bar, computer access, WiFi and a nap room. The VIP rooms offer comfier seating in leather Chesterfield-style sofas.

The airport offers two free half-day city tours for those on layovers of between seven and 24 hours.

Morning tours depart from Terminal 2 at 08:00 and 13:30, with pick-ups at Terminal 1 15 minutes later. Places are limited to 18 and are on a first-come, first-served basis, with sign-ups at the Tourist Service Centers, located in arrivals at either terminal. The morning tour takes in the Sanxia and Zushi temples plus the Yingge Pottery Museum. Afternoon highlights include Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and Taipei 101. Guests must have a valid visa or be from a visa-exempt country.

Chair massages including head, neck, shoulders, waist and back can be had at this massage center where treatments are offered by the blind and partially sighted. Located on the 3rd floor of T2, it is open 10:00 - 18:00. Massages start from USD 10.00.

Provided by Ching Bing Auto Leasing and Hotai Auto Leasing. Both companies offer self-drive and chauffeur driven vehicles for hire.

On the 1st floor of Terminal 1, the Taiwanese Gourmet Bar (open 10:00 – 22:00) offers locals delicacies such as salt-and-pepper chicken, sweet potato fries with plum and pearl milk tea.

At Terminal 2’s Gate D3, there’s a cultural experience area where guests can learn calligraphy and draw on paper fans and umbrellas. Lessons take around 30 minutes and are free. Guests also receive a free zodiac souvenir card.

Travelling between terminals

The Taoyuan International Airport Skytrain people mover that runs every 2-4 minutes in peak hours (06:00-22:00), and 4-8 minutes off-peak, 24 hours a day. It connects Concourses A and D, and Concourses B and C. It caters for both airside and landside passengers, who travel in different carriages.
