Car hire agencies are available at Car Hire Centre, provided by Hertz, Europcar, Enterprise and Avis. Free shuttle bus between the terminal and the car hire centre is available
To avoid London's notorious traffic, we recommend you take the train. However, if you have plenty of time, you'll save a lot of money by taking the bus, and will avoid having to take a shuttle bus to the train station.
The quickest way into central London is by train from Luton Airport Parkway station, 1.5km away. An East Midlands/Thameslink train will take you to St Pancras in 25/35 minutes and Blackfriars in 45 minutes. First, you'll need to take First Capital Connect's 'Train2Plane' shuttle bus to the train station, which runs every 10 minutes from 05:00-00:00, and the journey takes 10 minutes.
Cost: Around GBP 14 one-way online, GBP 15.50 at the station (plus GBP 2.10 one-way, GBP 3.40 return for shuttle bus)
Buying tickets: Machines at the station or online: www.london-luton.co.uk/en/traintickets (from early 2016, you can use an Oyster top-up card). Please keep in mind that it's cash only for the shuttle bus.
To save money, take the low-cost easyBus, which is available to passengers of all airlines, not just easyJet. It takes you to London Victoria Station (stopping service, 1 hr 20 minutes) and Liverpool Street Station (non-stop, 1 hr 10 mins). Buses leave every 15 to 30 minutes, 24 hours a day.
Note: easyBus lets you carry one standard-sized bag plus hand luggage. If you’re carrying bulky items (prams, wheelchairs, sports equipment etc) you'll need to book an extra seat on the bus.
You can also take the National Express A1 bus (1hr 20 mins to London Victoria) which run 24/7 with 4 departures per hour, or the Green Line 757 (to Brent Cross and Baker Street), but it's likely they will cost you more (GBP 10-12).
Cost: From GBP 2 online, but prices vary considerably depending on how early you book
Buying tickets: Online (www.easybus.com), at the sales desk in Arrivals or on the bus (Victoria line only)
Location: Outside the main terminal building
Luton is quite a distance from London, so a taxi will be very expensive, and is subject to traffic in rush hours. Journey time will be at least one hour.
Cost: Over GBP 100 (plus discretionary 10% tip)
Location: Taxi rank outside the terminal
London Luton Airport lies 57km north of central London, and is the city's fourth largest airport (after Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted). It serves mostly low-cost airlines, like easyJet, Thomson Airways and Monarch (all of whom have their HQs there), and handles mainly flights to Europe.
The airport has one terminal, with Check-in and Arrivals on the ground floor, and Departures and Gates 1-28 on the first floor.
Airside, there are plenty of eating and shopping options, and landside, you'll find WHSmith and Marks and Spencers Simply Food shops, as well as several cafés and fast food outlets.
Though not as modern as Heathrow or Stansted, it can be an easy airport to transit through at off-peak times. However, it's known for being over-crowded and chaotic at times, and had the dubious honour of being voted worst airport in the UK in 2014 and 2015 by a Which? magazine survey.
Everyone knows and loves Frankie’s, the family-friendly, American-Italian restaurant chain.
