Getting around the airport

Two terminals and an Airport Plaza

Hamburg Airport lies 8.5km north of the city center. The four-level 'SkyWorld' building is made up of two terminals, connected by the Airport Plaza. You can walk easily between terminals.

Terminal 1

  • Level 0: Arrivals, pharmacy, meeting point, baggage claim
  • Level 1: Departures, check-in, information, customs, access to gates
  • Level 2: Prayer room
  • Level 3: Restaurants

Airport Plaza

Used for security clearance. Contains a conference center, lounges, restaurants, shops and the S-Bahn train station.

Terminal 2

  • Level 0: Arrivals, meeting point, airport office, car rental, post office, baggage claim
  • Level 1: Check-in, information, access to gates
  • Level 2: Lounge, conference center
  • Level 3: Restaurants

Power outlets

Throughout the airport

In general there are some power sockets available throughout the airport, hidden near the seats at the waiting areas often, most of them at the airside. In addition also at:

Upper Deck, Terminal 2, level 1, after security, near Gate A17
'The Upper Deck' is a great free waiting area with a park atmosphere and numerous power sockets, USB-slots and comfortable seats.

Getting into Hamburg

Take the S-Bahn

Hamburg Airport is extremely close to the city of Hamburg, and public transport is a quick and cheap way to get into the centre.

Train

The local S-Bahn train takes you to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) in about 25 minutes and leaves every 10 minutes. 

When returning to the airport, make sure you travel in the first three carriages. The others will be separated from the train at Ohlsdorf station and will bring you to the suburbs.

Cost: Under EUR 5 one-way
Location: Main Terminal, underground level

Taxi

A taxi will take you to the centre in about 25 minutes, but this can also take 40 minutes on a busy morning.

Ridesharing

MOIA, German's newest ridesharing service, now operates from Hamburg Airport. To book a ride, you must download the app and create an account.

Cost: Approximately EUR 8,50 for 1 person or EUR 12,70 for 2 people for a ride to Hamburg Central Station (Hamburg HBF)

Hamburg airport miniature model

Modellschau

Hamburg Airport hosts a perfect model of its facility with all its buildings, runways 500 times smaller and illuminated by 8,000 luminous diodes. An entertaining show gives inside information on all that is happening behind the scenes of the airport. Hamburg airport in times of the zeppelins gives an interesting insight into the history of the airport.

Miniature airplanes will be starting and landing to airplane sounds while your seats vibrate in a simulated takeoff.
The show is suitable for kids 5+ years.

Airport refurbishments

Apron, gates, baggage processing

Many changes are coming to Hamburg Airport. On a mission to improve the efficiency and flexibility of ground operations and infrastructure, the airport has commenced various projects including apron refurbishments, jetbridge construction, an upgrade in the baggage processing and inspections systems and a redesign of the Airport Plaza, the airport's shopping area. 

Please keep in mind that, due to construction work throughout the airport, you might be affected by flight delays or cancellations.
